When ChatGPT came out last November 2022, we shared our opinion on how it could be a game changer and a big morale boost for the AI industry. Fast forward to today, I believe that we are all starting to feel the impact of Generative AI in our daily lives.
Before ChatGPT came out, people thought that AI would have the biggest impact on blue collar jobs, however we can now see that white-collar and creative jobs are also impacted. The launch of image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E have impacted a lot of people in the creative industry, and at the same time it has provided others with the ability to generate art by using simple prompts.
I myself am no exception; the prospect of creating visually stunning art with Midjourney despite having no artistic direction just astounds me everytime I generate images for my work.
And of course, the rise in generative AI has brought about a lot of uncertainties of what the future holds. People will be displaced, scared and angry – and so far no one knows what capabilities generative AI possesses and how it can impact their careers. Goldman Sachs even released a report that Generative AI is set to affect 300 million jobs across major economies.
But what exactly is Generative AI? Where did it come from? What is the impact on us as individuals, companies, and society as a whole?
Momentum Academy held an event “Off the record: The future, by ChatGPT” to discuss these questions and other key topics surrounding generative AI.
You can download the full event deck of The future, by ChatGPT here.
Here are some interesting perspectives raised during the event:
Is this the 5th industrial revolution?
Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia said in a keynote speech that “We are at the iPhone moment of AI”, describing that the impressive capabilities of AI has created a sense of urgency for companies to reinvent their products and business models. This also reminds us back to 2007 when iPhone first launched, do you remember the debates and controversies back then?
Generative AI can make judgement but can we hold them accountable?
Despite their capability to make judgement for others, ChatGPT and Generative AI are currently not held accountable for their suggestions. When we start using Generative AI to suggest solutions to bigger problems, it could result in dire consequences that we were not aware of prior to making these decisions. And it may be just a matter of time before we hold ChatGPT accountable for its judgements.
People have started to realise the bigger implications that could occur if AI develops too fast, which prompted the foremost names in the tech industry to call for an open letter to pause advanced AI system development.
And what’s going on in China?
Meanwhile, in China, Baidu has been working on its own AI model to varying degrees of success. A lot of people are comparing Baidu’s Ernie to ChatGPT but does it matter if Baidu’s answer to ChatGPT is good enough, or not?
However, one thing to note, Ernie-Bot has been making significant progress within just a few days.
In the end, whether the pause is happening or not, all companies need to keep on innovating in order to stay relevant.
