People who are familiar with China often hear the term “Tier 1/2/3/4city”.

In China a city of Tier 1 differs from all the rest in its vast size, dense population (with good consumption power), and advanced logistics infrastructure and concentration of founders/investors.

Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the typical Tier 1 cities in people’s minds. Interesting, while much of the manufacturing and cross border trade was concentrated in Guangzhou, in terms of tech giants, the city of Hangzhou, where Alibaba is headquartered, has created much more market cap.

Beijing, as the capital but also as the vibrant center for engineering schools and dreamers, is much more prominent in tech value creation compared to Shanghai, the country’s largest city and commercial/financial centre.

This is covered in Jianggan’s new book, Seeing the Unseen: Behind Chinese tech giants’ global venturing. where they cover major Chinese tech giants, the reasons behind their success and the challenges they faced when they expanded overseas.

We have created a simple infographic showing you where some of the top tech or tech-enabled companies are from/headquartered in – hope you enjoy it!:
